UNCG alumnus Thomas Linger ’16 recently won the 2017 American Jazz Pianist Competition.
The first-place prize package is valued at $10,000 and includes the opportunity to perform at several venues.
The 2017 competition was held in February at the Atlantic Music Center in Melbourne, Florida, and featured seven finalists competing for the grand prize. Each pianist was required to perform solo and trio sessions in front of a live audience.
The judges panel included Lynne Arriale, professor of jazz studies and director of small ensembles at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville; Martin Bejerano, piano department head at the University of Miami; and jazz pianist and composer Bill Mays, who also appeared in concert at the competition.
