Claudia Emerson, who received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 2006, has died. The cause of death was cancer, said Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was professor of English.

The acclaimed poet was awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Library of Congress and the Guggenheim Foundation. She was poet laureate of Virginia from 2008-2010.

She received her MFA degree in Creative Writing at UNCG in 1991, and she served as poetry editor of the Greensboro Review in 1990-91.
