Dr. Eric Ford, a professor in the Bryan School of Business and Economics and the School of Nursing, was interviewed by The Business Journal about how Medicare penalties could impact Birmingham, Ala. area hospitals.

As paraphrased by the article, Ford said the penalties will hit the bottom line of hospitals, but could also prompt them to avoid sicker patients and create programs to better manage patients after discharges.

“This is a big challenge for them,” he said. “For many hospitals, it means they’ll have to let people go.”

He also added that bigger hospitals will likely address the Medicare penalties through attrition, while smaller facilities may have to slash positions.
