Greensboro Opera has extended its collaboration with UNCG through creation of the Young Artist Program, as reported by the News & Record. The program, which involves recent UNCG graduates, will bring opera into schools and retirement communities, rather than just present it in a theater setting.

The debut performance, “Music in Fashion,” took place Sunday, Dec. 8, in the downtown clothing store Mack and Mack, and featured selections with a clothing theme, such as the character Colline’s “Overcoat” aria from “La Bohème.”

Due to recent economic hardships and an increased need for community involvement, the opera board has increased its collaboration with UNCG’s opera program, which included two successful gala concerts last summer.

Greensboro Opera will present Gaetano Donizetti’s “The Daughter of the Regiment” at UNCG’s Aycock Auditorium in January 2015, its first full operatic production since 2010. The lead tenor role will be performed by René Barbera, who won a local concert with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra as his prize in UNCG’s Charles H. Lynam Vocal Competition.
