Dr. David Holian, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed by WFMY News 2 regarding the furloughing of congressional staff due to the government shutdown.

He said that while there are probably logical reasons for how many employees each politician can can keep on, that “there’s an element of politics in everything politicians do.”

Holian is paraphrased as saying that he believes that they may also be sending a message about how politicians see their jobs.

“Members may also feel that their job is more than showing up and voting. It’s helping constituents,” he said.
