The Lincoln Financial Foundation has made a gift of $40,000 to UNCG  for a pair of programs, IT is for Girls and the UNCG Guarantee.

“IT is for Girls is a program designed to inspire middle and high school girls about information technology and help them see that that a career in information technology is within their reach,” said Chuck Cornelio, President of Retirement Plan Services for Lincoln Financial Group. “The UNCG Guarantee program takes the next step by identifying promising low-income youth and providing them with the mentoring and support necessary for college success.

“Both of these programs align with the Lincoln Financial Foundation’s goals of keeping kids in school and giving them the tools and resources to help them take charge of their lives.”

IT is for Girls is a joint program between  UNCG and the Guilford County Schools  that brought 70 middle school girls in grades 6 to 8  to the UNCG campus July 8-12. The fun-filled week was designed to increase awareness about information technology careers and education. The girls got to work on creating animation, video game design, LEGO Robotics, developing Android applications and Internet security.

Founded in 2009, the UNCG Guarantee program helps eligible North Carolina students graduate with little or no debt. Qualifying students receive a financial aid package, academic support, mentoring and opportunities for enrollment in the Lloyd International Honors College and study abroad. Part of the gift will be applied toward programming for the initiative this fall.
