U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s visit to UNCG Thursday drew about 200 people, including TV and print journalists and former N.C. Governors Beverly Perdue and Jim Hunt.

During his visit, Duncan announced a $20 million Department of Education grant to N.C. New Schools, which partners with UNCG’s iSchool to deliver online early college courses to high school students in rural areas of the state.

“I get to feel like Santa Claus today,” Duncan said, calling the funds “not a gift, but an investment.” He said N.C. Rural Schools earned that additional investment by showing tangible, real-world results in significantly lower drop-out rates and significantly higher graduation rates.
