The UNCG men’s basketball team clinched the Southern Conference regular season title Monday night, knocking off East Tennessee State (ETSU) 72-66 in front of a packed house at Greensboro Coliseum.
The win moved the Spartans (23-8, 14-4) into a three way-tie atop the standings with ETSU and Furman. By virtue of its 3-1 record against the two teams, UNCG will enter the Southern Conference Tournament this weekend as the No. 1 seed – and can call itself regular season champions.
“Our fans were great tonight. To have that many people cheering us on and invested in the game, it was a great atmosphere for our guys,” said Head Coach Wes Miller after the win. “But we’re not done yet. We’ve said all along there is no finish line. This is a great night for us, but there’s still basketball left to be played.”
The championship is the third in program history in Southern Conference play and the first overall championship, as the past two championships were North Division titles in the 2001-02 and 2011-12 seasons. The team’s 23 victories tie the program record at the NCAA Division I level.
Miller and company will travel to Asheville this weekend and open play in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament on Saturday, March 4. The Spartans will play the winner of No. 8 Western Carolina and No. 9 The Citadel at noon in the U.S. Cellular Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
