The top-seeded UNCG men’s basketball team is headed to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals after it knocked off The Citadel 76-67 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.

Saturday’s victory was historic for the Spartans – the team’s 24 wins are the most in its 50-year history.

“For us, it’s just about finding a way [to win] this time of year. We really responded in the second half,” said Head Coach Wes Miller. “Our seniors really led the charge for us. It was a team effort with multiple guys going to the glass.”

Miller and company also had help from the sea of blue and gold in the arena – several buses of alumni and students arrived in Asheville on Saturday morning to cheer on the team, and more busloads of UNCG faithful are scheduled to return for the semifinal matchup.

The Spartans will face the winner of No. 4 Chattanooga and No. 5 Wofford on Sunday, March 5, at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
