Paul Chelimo ’14, UNCG’s first Olympian, isn’t the only Spartan in Rio de Janeiro. UNCG Athletics staff arrived in the city today to document this historic moment for UNCG and share exclusive content from Chelimo’s journey with the entire UNCG community.

Throughout the week, UNCG Athletics will post behind-the-scenes footage and real-time updates from the Olympics on its website and social media channels. The campus community is encouraged to follow along and support Chelimo using the hashtag #ChelimoInRio.

“We are excited to show our support for one of UNCG’s very own on the biggest athletic stage,” said Matt McCollester, assistant athletic director for athletics communications and marketing. “This is a great way to kick off our 50th year of recognized athletics at UNCG.”

Chelimo will compete in the first round of the 5,000 meter race on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 9:05 a.m. EST. The race will stream live at NBCOlympics.com. The final round is Saturday, Aug. 20, at 8:30 p.m. EST and will broadcast live on NBC.

The trip to Rio de Janeiro is funded by externally generated revenue. For more information about UNCG Athletics, visit uncgspartans.com.
