You’ve probably heard of GRAMMY Award winners Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen. Now add Phillip Riggs to the list of stars.

The UNCG alumnus was named Music Educator of the Year by the GRAMMY Foundation and the Recording Academy. He was nominated for the award by a former student.

Throughout his 27 year career, Riggs has taught music in Ashe, Davidson and Forsythe counties, and he currently teaches at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham.

He received his master of education degree from UNCG in 1998. His bachelor’s degree in music education is from Appalachian State University.

Riggs isn’t the first UNCG alumnus to receive a GRAMMY nod for music education. Last year, Danny Yancey ’07 M.M.Ed was a finalist for the same award.
