Dr. Olav Rueppell, associate professor in the Department of Biology, was interviewed by NBC News regarding new research on the decline of honey bees.

Although Dr. Rueppell was not involved with the new study, he is paraphrased as saying that the finding jives with earlier studies pointing to interactions between various factors as a cause for honey bee decline.

In an e-mail to NBC News, he had further comments about the validity of the new study.

“But this study is particularly nice bed because it takes actually the pollen that bees bring into the hive … to compromise honey bee immunity,” Rueppell said. “Therefore, many substances are involved and seem to have an effect.”
