This week UNCG hosts the Southern Conference Softball Championship Tournament, which means Spartan fans can cheer on the newly named SoCon Player of the Year, Katelyn Bedwell.

Bedwell is the first UNCG softball player named Player of the Year since Jennifer Hubbard in 2003. Bedwell broke the single-season school record for runs batted in this season with 64 – and she tied UNCG’s home run record with 17. The senior first baseman’s .429 batting average also is a school record, as is her .845 slugging percentage.
Along with Bedwell, sophomores Lindsay Thomas and Nicole Thomas were first team All-Conference selections. Junior Dominique Madruga was named second team All-Conference.
The No. 5 seed Spartans, which finished the season with seven straight wins, will take on No. 4 seed Samford at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
