Today marks the start of a new semester, a new year, and a new decade for Spartans.
It’s an exciting – and busy – time at UNC Greensboro, with the University hosting a variety of events for students, faculty, staff, and the Greensboro community.
Throughout the month of January, there will be a winter ball for students, new exhibitions at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, a day of service to the community, a visit by renowned musician Emmylou Harris, and more.
Here’s a look ahead at some of the events and activities taking place on campus this month:
Winterfest Welcome Week
Jan. 15-30
UNCG’s Winterfest festivities include a winter ball, murder mystery dinner, and gingerbread party. See the full schedule at the Student Affairs website.
MLK Day of Service
Saturday, Jan. 18
Live out UNCG’s motto of “Service” at the annual MLK Day of Service event, which takes place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students can learn more and register at the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement website.
UNCG hoops double-header Saturday, Jan. 18
The women’s basketball team – which is off to its best start this century – will take on Western Carolina at 4 p.m. at Fleming Gym. The men’s basketball team will face Chattanooga at 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. Students are invited to a free pre-game tailgate at the Coliseum before the men’s game. Joint MLK Celebration
Wednesday, Jan. 22
Activist, advocacy educator, youth engagement expert, producer, and TED Talk speaker Natalie Warne will deliver this year’s keynote address for the annual Joint MLK Celebration, which is held in conjunction with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The event is free and open to the public and will take place Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium on the campus of N.C. A&T. Read this story to learn more.
Masterclass and Q&A with Emmylou Harris
Friday, Jan. 24
Singer-songwriter and UNCG alumna Emmylou Harris will host a masterclass and Q&A for UNCG students, faculty, staff, and the Greensboro community on Friday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. in UNCG Auditorium. Harris will perform that evening to a sold-out crowd.
New Weatherspoon Art Museum exhibitions
January
Throughout the month of January, the Weatherspoon Art Museum will open three new exhibitions:
- “Finding Meaning: The Power and Possibility of Abstraction” (already open)
- “Time, Space, Place, Trace” (already open)
- “To the Hoop: Basketball and Contemporary Art” (opening party on Jan. 31)
